NBC News photojournalist Alan Rice and correspondent Steve Patterson sit down to discuss what it’s like to report on western wildfires. They also share how news crews can stay safe while covering dangerous, fast-moving blazes.
“You need to take a breath. Look and see where the fire is blowing, so you don’t get hurt yourself,” Rice said. “But also, I think you need to see where the story can go. It’s easy to just get some flames burning and a house in the background. But then you have to see where you should be next.”
