Vice President of Global Security of NBC News Sallie Norris goes over best practices for how to stay safe while reporting on civil unrest. There are tips for what reporters should do before a protest, the day of a protest and during a protest.
Staying safe while covering civil unrest
When you’re at the protest, be mindful of your surroundings at all times. The last place you want to be is in between protesters and law enforcement, especially if things get out of control. You’ll want to stay on the edge of the crowds in general in case you need to get out quickly. You can always film the protesters as they walk by. And if you want to interview a specific protester, make sure to do it away from the center of the crowd.
