Safely Covering Wildfires

NBC News Senior Coordinating Producer Al Henkel discusses the dangers of covering a fire and how to be prepared before covering wildfires. If you are going out to report on a fire, make sure you bring the right gear. Journalists should also wear all personal protective equipment and get properly trained when covering wildfires.

“As we build more houses in the woods, and have disagreements about forest management, we’re going to cover more fires,” Henkel said. “If you don’t know what to do, ask a firefighter. They would rather share tips on how to be safe, than have to come rescue you when you are in over your head.”
