Glamour Gals is on a mission to end elder isolation through makeovers.
Rachel Doyle created the nonprofit organization 24 years ago after her grandmother passed away in an assisted living facility. She realized many seniors didn’t receive visitors and wanted to find a way to connect them with teens. According to a recent MedicareFAQ report, more than 57% of seniors in the U.S. feel lonely.
“I love the idea that her passions live on,” Doyle said. “Though I couldn’t give her the makeover I always wanted to give to her, I have the opportunity to meet so many other grandmothers and provide that moment for them.”
Glamour Gals has since grown nationwide, with over 100 high school and college chapters and over 100,000 makeovers given to seniors.
“It makes the older people feel like they’re young again,” said Lenore, a senior resident at the Chateau at Brooklyn Nursing Center. “It makes me think of my high school days. They were fun and exciting.”
